Orthopedic surgeon Omar H. Akhtar, MD, has performed thousands of surgeries, with particular expertise in total joint replacement of the hip and knee. Dr. Akhtar moved to Austin, Texas, to join Capital City Orthopaedics in 2013 after practicing in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

Before beginning his medical career, Dr. Akhtar worked as an electrical engineer. He earned engineering degrees from Rutgers University in New Jersey and the University of Pennsylvania before acquiring his medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

Dr. Akhtar went on to complete his residency in orthopedic surgery at Michigan State University, where he was Chief Resident for his final year. He continued to pursue specialty training in total joint replacement during his fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.

As a joint replacement specialist, Dr. Akhtar has extensive experience with the most advanced procedures available. He has expertise in partial and total hip replacement, including anterior, posterior, and lateral approaches. Dr. Akhtar performs customized knee replacements with the Mako™ robotic arm and handles complex revision surgeries for failed hip and knee replacements.
